Well I took Alex to Baby Watch (Utah's Early Intervention Program) to have him assessed this week. Months of being slightly concerned about his movement finally escalated to weeks of obsessing about it and that was enough to move me to action. Course I was sort of absorbed by constant fret about his helmet before...so maybe I can only focus on obsessing about one thing at a time. Which by the way, his head is looking good and his doc assures me that it'll continue to mold out in this next year as he grows. Phew!
But back to Baby Watch. They had him play with toys to do some basic tests on fine motor skills mostly and asked me a bunch of questions about what he was and wasn't doing. When they scored him, he came out age appropriate on every area but 2 - gross motor (movement) was at 7 months and language was at 10 months. Language though they admitted may very well be due to his personality (mellow as can be) and we'd be able to see more into that aspect when he started moving more. So, we'll be starting physical therapy the week after the 4th of July. I'm happy we got into the program and to start doing something more proactive than worrying. This program is great for a couple of reasons - they come into your home several times a month and teach parents exercises/strategies for moving things along and it's based on a sliding scale which is quite reasonable and in our case only $30/month. That's less then one copay for a physical therapy visit. Anyway, maybe this whole business is just because Alex has always been so content sitting and playing with toys but I'd rather be safe then sorry. Look how darling he is!
He is 100% darling. Audrey didn't crawl until she was almost 11 months and didn't walk until she was 14 months old. And I didn't mind waiting a little bit longer. But she climbed long before she walked and got into lots of trouble. Good luck with everything!
