Every year I get a bad cold that completely takes me out of commission for a couple of days, progresses to a sinus infection and then lingers with an awful chest rattling cough for weeks. At least it started on a weekend this year, and Alex (also not feeling well) cooperated by sleeping my sickest day away. One can only hope that Ben's brain won't turn to mush from the unmentionable hours of movies he sucked down over the weekend. The rest of my week went something like this:
- Monday: after doing nothing for 3 days, I felt better and thought with my dwindling sick leave and a plate full of projects, I better go to work. I felt ok until I tried to drive home. My head felt encased in fog and my judgment impaired. 10 miles into my 30+ mile trip I called Dave and told him we were hunkering down in a parking lot until he could come pick us up.
-Tuesday: I wisely stayed home and visited the doc. With an antibiotic for a sinus infection in hand, the pounding pressure in my head quickly started to recede.
- Wednesday: With temperatures in the single digits when I left for work, stopping for gas was pretty low on my priority list. Despite Dave's multiple warnings, I get gas in the winter as little as possible because I really, really hate being cold. Well, this time I pushed my gas light too far. Less than 2 miles from work, just as I had started to exit the freeway, my car wouldn't go any farther. As I pulled off reality hit - 3 kids, no cell phone and low teen temperatures - not my best start to a day. After standing outside looking pitiful for a bit didn't impress anyone enough to pull over, I got more proactive by waving one of Dave's red work rags. That got more immediate results and I was able to borrow a cell phone to call work. My great coworkers came to the rescue and the kids were warm at daycare and the car gassed up in no time. Lesson learned.
- Thursday: The high point of the week. Alex cut his first tooth - a lower incisor! You can barely see it even with his mouth wide open but here's my attempts at photographing this milestone.
And not to be outdone...Spiderman. Complete with spider webs (ie mardi gras necklaces.)
I have to say, that had the run-out-of-gas thing happened to me, I would have just told my coworkers to take me to the mental hospital! And I can't believe Alex has a tooth. Cole still doesn't have any!
ReplyDeleteGetting stuck on the side of the road with kids in the car is one of my biggest fears. You handled yourself well. I'm glad you guys made it to where you supposed to go. Whew! What a crazy few days you had.
ReplyDeleteIt was a horrible week! It was interesting to read and I even chuckled a little (sorry). I would have cried.
ReplyDeleteI did something similar last week when I was sick. I was in SO much pain when I left Tanner clinic in Kaysville and trying to find the closest pharmacy I drove clear up to HWY 89...what the??!! I must have been in a lot of pain to drive clear up that way only to have to back track and hit the Layton Walgreens and then the freeway to my home here in Clinton. I have no idea why I did what I did. I guess when your sick you don't think rationally.
I'm glad you're better though. Sorry it was a horrible week for you.
