Genes I could do without

My dad always says I'm just like my mom.  I am in many ways, though I lack her compassion and patience.  But there are a few of her tendencies I wish I hadn't inherited (sorry mom): her need to always be busy and her inability to go grocery shopping in less than 2 hours.  I'll always remember a grocery shopping trip with my mom when we were in Texas for Christmas several years ago.  She had a really long list and we must have been in there for hours when I realized she had gone into this daze.  I couldn't figure out why the simplest of tasks (choosing which brand of food to buy) seemed so difficult for her.  Fast forward 4 years and 2 kids later.  I go into that daze every time I go grocery shopping.  Something about the huge amount of groceries I buy at a time (because I put off grocery shopping as long as possible), combined with my need to price compare and label read, leave me in this awful funk.  I expect menu planning and coupon shopping don't help my late night clarity of mind either. Case in point.  Tonight I entered Winco foods at about 9:45 pm.  I emerged at 12:05 am, physically and mentally exhausted.  Maybe I need to consider mail order groceries.  Or a maid.

Stories about my big boy:  I slipped on the stairs today and landed hard on my tailbone.  At my request, Ben came and gave me a big hug to help me feel better.  Than he preceded to tell me that I needed to be careful and demonstrated the right way to walk down the stairs.  "See mom, you have to watch your feet.  You need to be more careful."  His other favorite thing to tell me to do is close the bathroom door.  I've become accustomed to leaving the bathroom door open when it's just us home, since little people seem to always be clambering for my attention.  But Ben's been reminding me that I need to show a little more common decency.  "Close the bathroom door when you use the bathroom.  Remember next time, okay."  I'll work on it Ben.

  1. You sound like my mom! She can be at the grocery store for 4 hours! No kidding either. My dad has to go with her to get her out of there in two.
