Baby Powder

It's been a baby powder kind of week. You know, the kind where you throw some baby powder in your hair to absorb the grease because taking a shower would mean 30 minutes less of sleep. The kind of week where both your vehicles break down at the same time and just to satisfy the rule of threes, so does your swamp cooler. The kind of week where you put in 60 hours at work and then when you finally get home squeeze studying into every spare minute for an exam that's the culmination of years of education and professional practice.

It's the kind of week where you keep up your kids past their bedtime just so you can spend 1 hour of your day with them. The kind of week where the thought enters your head, why am I keeping up this insanity? Maybe I should quit my job, sure that would mean declaring bankruptcy, losing our house and living off welfare but at least then I could see my kid's pains and triumphs rather than hearing about them from others.

This has been the kind of week where I'm venting at 630 in the morning because my less than 5 hours of sleep a night and emotional exhaustion caused me to pedal just a little too slowly this morning to the train station (remember no car) and I missed my train by 2 minutes. Maybe next week, after my exam, life will seem a little less overwhelming. But more likely, some element of my work and home life will keep me running. All I can think when someone passes judgment on me for my poor attempts at balancing a career and family (and this happens on the career side and stay at home side) is they have no idea what it's like. Sigh, carry on.

  1. Your rant is way less complainy than mine and you have far more to complain about! You will do awesome on your test... and then you'll get a raise. Oh wait, I remember where we work. You can do it! And remember that I will never pass judgment on your crazy work/home balance because my is out of whack too!
